Leap of Faith
A Short Story.
Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump! Maria could hear her heart beating, louder than it ever had. Standing at the edge of the railing, she felt a gush of air hit her making her almost lose her balance.
It was the second floor and she could see all the nearby houses even though it was quite dark. She could hear the neighbor’s dog barking faintly somewhere in the dark.
I can do this, she thought to herself. I have to, it’s the only way I will get what I want.
She thought back to all the times she was called a coward, someone who did not take risks. Well, jumping from the second floor will show them, she thought.
She took another shaky step, almost tipping over the edge.
Maria replayed the day in her mind. It had been quite a day. In just one day she had lost her job, she had lost her house; lost everything that ever had mattered to her.
She was free. Not yet. All she had to do was jump over the edge and she finally will be.
Without another thought, she took the leap.
Before she knew it, she felt water gushing in her nostrils with a pressure that was almost unbearable. This was it.
“Woohoo!”, “You did it, Maria!”, “I knew you could!” she looked at the faces of her friends…
