Reluctance seems to be an epidemic these days. We see people (including ourselves) all around us holding on to a particular opinion even though there is tons of evidence against it. Let’s take an example of people sitting at powerful positions persistently denying important issues like Global Warming, ignoring every sign every news supporting it just because they believe they are right.

What would you think of hardheaded people like that, who continuously refuse to change their opinions?

If we already know the answer, why do we still loathe accepting that we are in the wrong and change our opinions? Is it because of our ego, or is it because we believe it makes us look more confident?

Previous studies show that people actually believe holding on to their opinions might make them look confident but at the same timeless intelligent. But they still continue to do so because of the possible embarrassment in front of others. It was found that they preferred to do it in privacy.
